Information For Public Indoor Pool Owners
The public pool owner is rarely involved with the pool design and construction. An architectural design company is hired to design everything, work with engineers, pool consultants, manufacturers and the representation, contractors, pool builders and all other trades to come up with a great building within budget.
This may very well lead to incorrect solutions in the design based on personal relationships amongst the team members. Considering that in most cases the indoor pool is the most expensive part of any development it is of the utmost importance that the owner gets aquainted with the problems of indoor pool design and operation. It is important to know that most pool consultants “work below the water line” Their expertise is in filters and pumps, support for the plumbing team, and their work is extremely important, but at the same time, the owner has to realize that it is above the water line where the customers live and breath, the life guards perform their duties and most energy is wasted.
An indoor pool is a very expensive project. Do it right the first time, do not save on equipment quality, do not save on energy saving products. They bring you savings for the next 20 years. There is no need for a two year payback. An indoor pool is not a “built and sell” project. In almost every case, the indoor pool is never sold. There are two groups of public pool owners: those that try to minimize their losses and those that make money with the indoor swimming pool. A pool may be compared with an airplane. Expensive to buy, expensive to maintain but still profitable if it is used most of the time by paying customers.
A public indoor pool owner ( for instance a hotel operator with an indoor pool ) could consider renting the pool to a local swimschool during the day. Diving classes or kayak training is another option. That way, money will be generated to maintain the pool and the equipment and there may be even a profit.
